gardening growth

Time for a wee garden update I think.

It’s been a whole month since my last ’serious’ post about my garden going’s on, and a busy time it’s been too.  Last time I reported in my seedlings were tiny and I didn’t know what a good proportion of them were thanks to a labelling disaster … I now know what they are!  But do you?  Here’s a more recent pic … correct answers get some link love?!

It says ’sweetcorn’ on the trough … they’re not … and that’s your only clue!

You may also recall (although probably not) that I had been busy shovelling shit from outside of the old-dear-down-the-road’s house which had been kindly donated … well it didn’t take me long to get some tatties into the manure rich earth and they’re now coming through which should mean that I’ll be able to save thrup’ny  bit on food and instead spend it on fuel …

my tatties start to come through

… I would have had more in the ground, indeed, I have another 30 potatoes to go in, and a host of seedlings which I doubt will produce anything this year, but if I can get them to over winter I may get something early next summer.  Anyway, the reason all this stuff isn’t in the ground is that I’ve been busy rabbit proofing my patch and have only just finished it in the last few days … what an epic adventure that was.

It wasn’t difficult just time consuming and it was difficult to get peace away from the kids to get on with it.  I did have a slight ‘tiff’ with a person, who shall remain nameless, but who showed up at the door smelling strongly of drink demanding I replace the fence (it was down for less than 24 hours) between our property and the EMPTY field of unknown ownership next door … a fence I might add that I was going to replace with a shiny new one so that my new rabbit proof fence didn’t get blown over with the remains of the old one.

Apparently, this nameless person wants to put a horse in the field, I’m not aware that they have a horse, but you know, I’m a reasonable guy and if you approach me in a reasonable manner you’ll get a reasonable response.  Banging on living room window, proclaiming that you have “a bone to pick” with me, while smelling of drink isn’t what I consider to be reasonable … still, what’s done’s done.  It’s not a confrontation I’m liable to forget though and it’ll inform future relations.

Anyway here’s my fence:

See the adjoining field … see the invisible horse?!

I’m so good at these things ::blushes modestly:: that I even managed to order the EXACT amount of fencing that I needed providing me with the perfect opportunity to leave a ‘gap’ in the fence for a ’stile’:

Fences aside, I’ve been surprised that my broad beans and peas have survived so well … going so far as to flower without being eaten by rabbits or sheep.  Currently they are in my flower border, although next year they will be planted directly into the patch and the border will be packed out with fruit bushes instead.

Turns out that flimsy ‘fencing’ is better than no fencing at all!

Nice garden…you are farther ahead than I. My potatoes are still sitting in a box in my office…. I’d guess radishes, but there are an awful lot of them….

You know, ’round here, if I want to put a horse in a field (maybe that’s a euphimism?), I’m responsible for fencing my own horse in…..

Hi Leendaluu,

Isn’t it amazing where tatties’ll grow!!

Radishes? We’ll see ;)

You may have a point on the fencing point … it had occurred to me, but then it seems farmer’s are allowed to let their livestock roam willy-nilly and it’s the property owner who has to keep them out.

Christ! If you his a sheep (on the road) you have to pay the farmer compensation!?! How f/*-+d is that!!!

Everyone else - I know there are THOUSANDS out there lurking - Any advance on radishes?

[...] promised in my last gardening postsome ‘link love’ for those who could correctly guess what the mystery crop is.  [...]
