the exorcism of emily rose - movie review #4

The film was not what I had expected.  I had expected, indeed hoped for, a blood chilling horror movie with lots of scenes of posession and, hopefully, a body count!  Instead what I was treated to was a rather successful merging of two genres.

On the one hand there’s the horror flick which, in fairness, scored pretty good on the possession side of things with some fairly interesting moves that many a professional contortionist would have been proud to pull off!  The special effects weren’t over the top but were pretty effective at conveying the message that they’re intended to and the set design was spot on - especially the farmhouse where nothing seemed to be ‘in the right place’.  It gave quite a compelling impression of something being ‘wrong’.

On the other hand, there was a court room drama.  Not the best in the world but it didn’t need to be, it facilitates the telling of the tale and to be honest the final courtroom scenes are pretty ham.

If you have a passing interest in the supernatural this is probably worth a look, the most freaky thing about this film is that it’s based on a true story.

MATH Rating:  A fun supernatural thriller that ticks most of the boxes and adds some new ones … worth a look, but don’t get too excited.

Hi Alasdair

This may seem odd, but I think you could have cut the ‘horror’ scenes out, just focused on the Trial and told the story from either the Priest’s or Attorney’s point of view ( they did both and it muddled the story ) and it would have been a better movie.

After all, the movie was supposed to deal with faith and then it ran back and felt the need to ‘prove’ that Emily was possessed.

A few choice scenes at the end, some of those creepy shots of the farm house and I’m pretty sure you could have made your point.

Yeah I know what you mean, I’m actually more interested in the girls story which is what I think they were really trying to tell us through the eyes of the priest. I think they managed that to a point.

I think the lawyer was extraneous to be honest and I know what you mean by it being muddled from that side of things …

… I’ve just ordered ‘Requiem’ which is telling the same story, but is allegedly more honest to the ‘true story’, I’ll report back on it when I’ve seen it, which may be some time away depending on when it gets sent out. It’s a German Language film …

I can’t wait to hear about it.
